Megan G Merillat
Graduate Lecturer
I did my undergraduate work here at Mason and am currently working through (hopefully almost done with!) my masters program. For the past four years I have been broadening my understanding of “religion” and what it looks like in our culture and others. Throughout my studies I have had an attachment to lived and material religion and thinking about religion as an embodied experience that is shaped through our senses rather than an internalized belief system. I have archaeological experience from the ancient city of Antiochia and Cragum in Turkey and love thinking about how people in antiquity may have experienced things.
Current Research
I am interested in the historical development of Christianity as well as Christianity in its modern forms. I have been focusing on the ways white, Evangelical Christian ideals are perpetuated in our society through our systems of government and law. I am particularly interested in the intersections between religion and race, class, and gender and how these intersections manifest in our “secular” society.
