This graduate seminar offers a comparative study of Sunni and Shi’i thought and the historical development of Muslim doctrine in the context of particular social and political conditions. The course examines the essential differences between the Sunni and Shi’i schools of thought, beginning with their emphasis on the fundamentality of religious leadership for the continuation of the prophetic mission. The course goes on to examine the influence of Shi`i-Sunni differences on larger debates over Islamic juridical and ethical principles, and the relationship between reason and revelation.
